What about food cravings? Are they real? Will they make you gain weight?
Newport Beach Says:
Food cravings during the menstrual cycle have been thought of as a possible deterrent for weight loss. Amongst the three macronutrients (fat, carbohydrate, protein), no consistent relationship exists between a specific macronutrient, the menstrual cycle and weight gain.
One exception to this may be chocolate. Surveys have indicated that a majority of women craved chocolate particularly during the premenstrual phase. One study indicated that women who demonstrated symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome (PMS) had much stronger cravings for chocolate than women without PMS. Interestingly, it does not seem to be the chemical properties of chocolate that satisfy these cravings but rather the sensory experiences associated with chocolate such as aroma, sweetness and texture! Weight loss is hard to sustain during this time even when on a diet.
